At the end of the 14^th century, late Middle Age, in the German part of Europe and eastern part of France, street markets were held by merchants and artisans to offer their artistic production during the four weeks of Advent, so people could buy original presents for Christmas Eve.

The Christmas Market of Bautzen, east Germany is the first market known. Originally the place was a meat market and some daring merchants decided to take advantage of this and offer some products for presents. It was a success, over the years the gifts replaced the meat and the Meat Market became into what we know today as the Christkindlmarkt or Christmas Market
