Wool: A Natural Choice
In interior design, there are principles and elements to be considered as a guideline to create a functional and beautiful space that reflects your essence.
These are:
- Principles: proportion, scale, balance, harmony, unity/variety, rhythm and emphasis
- Elements: color, shape, texture, and pattern
The right use of them will impact significantly on your mood and wellbeing. For example, if you are looking for a relaxing and smooth atmosphere after a long workday, texture and harmony are two aspects to consider. Using fabrics, among other elements, will help you to reach that feeling of pleasure.
Understanding the exact type of fabric to use is basic to achieve your goal. There are natural fibers and synthetic fibers. Here at Snowdrop Handcraft, we prefer natural fibers such as cotton, silk, wool, and linen because they have been present for centuries in the development of society and come from natural sources.
The first natural fiber used by humans was wool. There are many types of wool and each one with very precise characteristics, here are some of the most used: Sheep, Merino, Mohair, Angora, Cashmere, and Alpaca. Some are softer than others or more resistant to pilling or even more luxurious than others; no matter its origin, wool is one of the world’s favorite natural fiber.
Raw wool fleeces are classified from the less fine to the finest, then they are washed, combed and weaved by expert’s hands that wisely and patiently transform simply fibers into threads with the help of a spindle, a straight spike made from wood that twists fibers or order to transform them into yarns. Then these yarns are weaved together to create fabrics.
Today wool has an important role in interior design, it’s used in furniture, rugs, pillows, throws even as an art element. The beauty of this textile is that it’s comfortable, soft and practical. It has a natural elasticity, a sort of natural memory that allows it to return to its original shape preventing this fabric from crushing and wrinkle after use, it also has an anti-static quality that repels dust and dirt from its surface and some are even anti-allergenic as Alpaca wool. These attributes give wool a lifetime quality, making it an attractive element to include in any décor project. So, if you are thinking of giving more personality to a room or maybe more texture, keep in mind that wool can be an interesting and natural choice.
